Who you hang around – that you will become.

“You cannot fly like an eagle when you are stuck with turkeys”.
If I told you that you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with – would you believe me?

Do this now:
1. Get a pen and paper and write down the people that you spend the most time with. It may be 20 names.
2. Scratch out family members.
3. Chose out of those names – the names that you spend the most time with.

THOSE are the people that will determine who you are, what you become and where you will go in life.

You have to exclude family members because we cannot choose your family. We can choose how we deal with them though.

I have seen effect on people in the work place environment. A person arrived on her first day – bubbly, talkative and energetic. She was hired for this reason. After her desk was moved into an office downstairs, her whole demeanour changed. The office was very negative with a lot of rumours and back biting going on. Not long after the move she was one of the office. She had changed completely purely because of who she was with most of the day.

Get out your mobile phone.
Go through the personal contacts.
DELETE anyone who brings you down when you talk to them.
How do you judge this? When you see their call come you either: do not want to answer and or go “ah no” not now.
For obvious reason you cannot delete business contacts and family.

This simple exercise will make a significant difference to you and your attitude.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the most successful in the room?

When you walk into the room of friends, have a look around and determine whether you are the most successful or knowledgeable. If you are, LEAVE. The only reason not leave is if you are teaching the people.
The reason for leaving the room is you cannot improve your knowledge in any way.
If you are not the most successful person – GREAT! You can learn from people and improve yourself.

Do the small things first

Small improvements can make a massive difference in life. Do not try and make a huge change or many changes at once. Change one thing at a time, master that and then change another and so on. Small changes are not difficult and soon make a huge difference.

“God, give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.”

– From the Serenity Prayer

Weather. Time. Attitude. Exam results. Government. Taxes. There are things in life that you can control or change and things you cannot control and never able to change. The things that you cannot control is no doubt the things you would love to control. The trick is to recognise the fact that you cannot that element and use it to your advantage.

Lets take the weather for an example. No one can change the weather and no one can control the weather. In my opinion, no one can accurately predict either. Many weather experts would argue that though. In Durban we moan about the heat and humidity in the summer and thenmoan about the winter being so cold. We really have mild winters relative to some places. It is more the absence of heat than the presence of cold.

Instead of walking around and moaning about it being too hot pr too cold, use the weather to your advantage. If it is really hot – hang the washing up on the line instead of putting it in the tumble dryer. If it is windy – same idea. Less tumble equals less electricity equals smaller bill! Winner!

With excercise, wind is always the biggest factor for most people. I have foind that cycling or running into the wind first is better than with the wind first. Mentally you know it will be faster on the way back. All the hard work is done in the first ‘half’ of the training. Try to never miss a training session because of weather because when you get to a certain event and its windy – you have to arrive and complete it. If you have trained in ‘bad’ weather then the stress is significantly decreased on the day.

The other side of the coin, the elements or factors you can change, This can be a tricky and horrible situation to deal with. Yes, you can change the factor, but changing it will lead to hurt, heartache or broken relationships etc. Changing the factors of life is not always going to be easy but it will always lead to a better time ahead for you and the people around you. This was painfully exhibited recently when I lost my job. I was not happy and in fact, looking back, I was miserable. I had lost all motivation to exercise (unusual) and study (surprisingly unusual) and was pretty much a mess to be around. Although it was hard, since that day, I happy been much happier and all normal desires and motivation is coming back. It has opened new hurt and stresses but I am happier without that job.

Change the factor of life you can change but use the uncontrollable factor to your advantage!

In life, we all have our ups and our downs, but it's how we react and respond that sets us apart. Often when replaying an incident in my head I'm surprised at how negative I was. It's a mind-set and you can and need to change it!
