This is something we should all read at least once a week!
Written By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio

To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me.
It is the most requested column I’ve ever written.

My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

1. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
4. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick.

Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
7. Cry with someone. It’s more healing than crying alone.
8. It’s OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won’t screw up the present.
12. It’s OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don’t compare your life to others.

You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn’t be in it.
15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye.

But don’t worry;  God never blinks.
16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

17. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.
18. Whatever doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger.
19. It’s never too late to have a happy childhood. But the
second one is up to you and no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don’t take no for an answer.
21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don’t save it for a special occasion.

Today is special.
22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important sex organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words ‘In five years, will this matter?’
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive everyone everything.
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give time
31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
32. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
33. Believe in miracles.
34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn’t do.
35. Don’t audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
36. Growing old beats the alternative — dying young.
37. Your children get only one childhood.
38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere
40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.
41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need
42. The best is yet to come.
43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
44. Yield.
45. Life isn’t tied with a bow, but it’s still a gift.

Spring and autumn are times of the year where the weather is unpredictable and each days temperatures change from warm to cold. Your muscles are like elastics so they react the same as elastic would in fluctuating temperatures, so when it is warm the muscles expand and when it is cold the muscles contract.

So what does this do?

The constant expanding and contracting of the muscles leads to spasm and the joints to be out of place from the constant expanding and contracting of the muscles, this in turn can lead to pain, headaches and constant muscle aches.

SO what can be done?

  • Get yourself adjusted to align the spine and ease off the muscles spasms
  • Keep yourself warm on the cool days
  • Needles and TENS for the affected muscles
  • Stretching
  • Take the appropriate vitamins
  • Eat healthily
  • Nice warm showers or baths to keep the muscles warm
  • Breathing exercises to keep the oxygen levels normal

Don’t live in pain if you are suffering at these times of the year, see your Chiropractor so that they can help and prevent it from getting worse.

Don’t be under the weather!

Colic babies are stressful on mums as they can’t stand to see their baby in pain.

Tips for the mommy to help aid in this crisis:

  • Always empty the breast when feeding, don’t switch from one to the other, baby needs both fore milk and hind milk
  • Avoid foods that are gassy e.g: cabbage, onions, garlic, carbonated drinks etc
  • Avoid caffeine and spicy foods
  • Try eliminating wheat and dairy from your diet and see how baby responds to the changes, if favourable there might be a food allergy problem
  • Certain burping positions are best for baby, the Chiropractor can help you with these
  • If bottle feeding, alternate holding positions of the baby when feeding to avoid the baby favouring one side
  • Also when bottle feeding try the special colic feeding bottles

Chiropractic neural massage and spinal mobilizations can help the gastrointestinal tract to function better and baby will feel more at ease and with less pain. There are healthy, alternative solutions to colic.

Chiropractic treatment has been known to help babies that suffer with colic and sleeping disorders. It calms and relaxes them to be able to function better.

What does a chiropractor do for the baby:

The chiropractor will assess the baby to make sure the appropriate reflexes are present and that the milestones are being met at the appropriate age. Some education on feeding and burping positions as well as dietary advice may be given to the mother. The chiropractor will apply gentle pressure over the affected joint/area to restore normal functioning, which then allows the nervous system to function at its best, alleviating irritation and pain at that site. Since the nerves to the muscles and organs exit from the spinal cord, optimum functioning of the spinal cord then enables the baby to grow and its bodily functions to be at its best.

A study of 1250 babies examined 5 days after birth, found that 211 suffered from vomiting, hyperactivity and sleeplessness. 95% had spinal abnormalities, and all showed improvement after chiropractic treatment (even after one session).

Definition of Colic

The definition of colic is an unexplainable and uncontrollable crying in children from 0-3 months of age, for more than 3 hours a day,3 times a week and for more than 3 weeks — usually in the afternoon and evening hours.

Colic is blamed on excess gas within the intestines, dietary problems and birth trauma, however the exact cause is unknown. Treatment for colic currently mainly revolves around pharmacotherapy (buscopan, colic drops etc), changing of the baby’s formulae and positioning techniques during feeding and burping. Chiropractic treatment is increasing in popularity & is becoming the treatment of choice.

Recent studies which compare chiropractic to drug treatment show that there is a significant improvement up to 90% of all cases with chiropractic treatment.

Chiropractors have reason to believe that the birth process could be one of the causes for colic. During birth the baby’s spine and neck may get damaged whilst moving down the birth canal. During the pushing stage the baby’s spine is under pressure from the squeezing and pushing of the contractions (induced labour amplifies this and increases the pressure on the spine).

When lying on your back during labour the pelvic opening is reduced by 1.5cm which places extra stress on the baby’s spine.

In order for the baby to go through the birth canal its head and neck have to twist into different positions which can cause problems later on. Signs and symptoms of such trauma can lead to irritability in the baby and can present as:

  • Colic
  • Poor feeding
  • Disturbed sleep patterns
  • Crying, restlessness, anxiety
  • Doesn’t want to lie on back
  • Reflux
  • Will only feed on one side
  • Head favours one side
  • Flat head

If you notice your baby is suffering with any of the following, why not have them checked out by a chiropractor, the treatments are gentle and effective.
