I may not have got to goal 1 yet but I have got the first brick session in my legs. It was not pretty. Not even close.

It was not fast.  Not even close.

I was not ready for it physically.  Not even close.

I was not not ready for it mentally.  Not even close.

Are you starting to see a trend here?

About the only good thing that happened was that I went out and did it! I completely tanked afterwards but it was nowhere near to the low I would have experienced if I had not gone out there.

So not pretty but it is one in the legs.

My arm is still up to scratch but getting stronger everyday. It was a little tired and sore after the above workout but that was mainly due to the aggressive setup of my road bike.

It has been a fairly long and tough 13 weeks since a log changed the direction of my bike and my life in a matter of seconds. I have witnessed amazing acts of kindness and will never take my left foe granted ever again.

The strengthening of my elbow, and in particular my triceps muscle, has begun.  Isotonic strengthening to be exact. This is strength exercises without moving in the joint. It feels very random but it takes as much effort.
My range of movement is pretty much full currently and the focus is to get the strength up to normal once more. Functional range of motion is 30 to 130 degrees and I have 11 to 142 degrees. The occupational therapist is very happy with that and is now focusing on the strengthening of the triceps and elbow.

 

When asked, i say to people that my elbow is about 90% healed. I believe that but also believe that the last 10% is probably going to take quite some time to attain. Strengthening is key for that 10% to be achieved. I am pretty much functional day-to-day with only the odd activity that I cannot do because of the lack of strength or range of motion.

Following my hospital stay, I was instructed to see an occupational therapist to rehabilitate by arm back to full strength. I did not think it would be as hard as it is though. The first appointment involved making a cast that limited my range of motion. In simple terms – so I did not move my arm to I ripped the tendon off!

Then the OT gave me the process and the plan to recovery. 5 months! That is 5 months until complete recovery i.e. back to normal. That is a long time. I was (and am) determined to do this properly. The warning from the surgeon was simple: Be very patient through the rehab otherwise you will not gain full power and strength back EVER!

Eish! So patient I have tried to be.

Weekly visits to the OT have been encouraging because I can see the improvement. This weekend will make 10 weeks since that fateful day and i am halfway through the rehab of 5 months. I have not driven in 10 weeks.

So 10 weeks in and I am halfway to my first goal of getting my arm back to full strength. this is possibly the most important step. Without my arm injury free, I am not going anywhere especially to a half iron man! At 10 weeks, strengthening started and although very limited, it is absolutely necessary to start small and build on those little steps.

This is going to be the theme through this experience, start with little steps and build on those.
